If you operate a chemical, refining, oil & gas, or wastewater facility in a cold climate, ANSI Z358.1 still requires a fully functional ANSI-compliant emergency shower and eyewash within 10 seconds of every chemical hazard — even when temperatures fall well below freezing. The Hughes H5G45G-1H solves the freeze-up problem that disables standard outdoor equipment: trace-tape heating wraps every length of pipework and is sealed inside a polyurethane-foam-insulated polyethylene jacket, helping protect the unit from freezing down to −4°F (−20°C) ambient.
This model includes galvanized steel pipework, a closed acrylic-capped ABS eye/face wash bowl, a removable self-draining overhead shower nozzle, and a 316L stainless steel stay-open shower valve. The unit is rated for Class 1, Division 2, Gas Groups C & D, Temperature Code T3 hazardous locations, runs on standard 120V single-phase power, and ships with a universal safety shower sign included.
The H5G45G-1H meets ANSI Z358.1-2014 and EN 15154 standards and supports OSHA emergency eyewash and shower requirements. EyewashDirect stocks the full Hughes outdoor cold-climate line with a Low Price Guarantee and direct manufacturer support.
Note on model numbers: Some distributors previously listed this unit as EXP-AH-5G/45GGALV-110. The current Justrite/Hughes part number is H5G45G-1H.
Key Features
Trace-tape heating with polyurethane-insulated jacket. Self-regulating heating tape runs the full length of every water line and is sealed inside a polyurethane foam core wrapped in an impact-resistant polyethylene outer jacket. The pipework is protected from freezing down to ambient temperatures of −4°F (−20°C).
Built-in air thermostat to cut power in warm weather. An integral air thermostat senses ambient temperature and automatically powers the heating tape down when conditions don't require it. That cuts year-round electrical cost and prevents overheating during summer months — no manual switching.
Class 1, Division 2 hazardous-location rated (Gas Groups C & D). Certified for installation in atmospheres where flammable gases or vapors may be present under abnormal conditions, including most common process hydrocarbons (Group D) and ethylene (Group C). Temperature Code T3 (max surface temp 200°C / 392°F).
ANSI-compliant flow rates with aerated eyewash diffusers. The shower delivers 20 GPM continuous through a self-draining nozzle; the eyewash delivers 3 GPM through chrome-plated brass diffusers with stainless steel filter mesh — gentle aerated flow that won't drive contaminants further into the eye.
Closed-bowl eyewash with auto-lid. A hinged ABS lid helps protect the bowl and diffusers from dust, debris, insects, and ice contamination between uses, then opens and activates flow the moment the lid is pulled forward — reducing the risk of finding a clogged eyewash when you need it most.
316L stainless steel stay-open ball valve. Full-bore valve stays open hands-free once activated, freeing both of the casualty's hands for self-decontamination during the full ANSI-required 15-minute flush.
Universal safety shower sign included. ANSI/OSHA-style identification signage ships with the unit for at-a-glance visibility during an emergency.
Important: Heat-Trace Protects Pipework, Not Flushing Fluid Temperature
The trace-tape heating system on the H5G45G-1H is designed to prevent water inside the pipework from freezing in cold ambient conditions. It is not a tepid-water heater and does not warm the supply water itself.
ANSI Z358.1 requires the flushing fluid delivered to a casualty to be between 60°F and 100°F (16°–38°C) for the full 15-minute flush. To meet that requirement in a cold-climate installation, a separate tepid-water source — typically a thermostatic mixing valve (TMV) on a tempered hot/cold supply — is required upstream of the unit. Hughes offers a factory-installed TMV option; ask EyewashDirect for a quote.
Which Version Is Right for You?
Hughes builds this combination unit in four configurations. The H5G45G-1H is the most commonly specified — galvanized pipework, 120V — but if your environment is highly corrosive (coastal, marine, salt spray, certain chemical exposures) or your facility runs on 240V supply, choose the matching variant below:
| Part Number | Pipework | Voltage | When To Choose |
|---|---|---|---|
| H5G45G-1H | Galvanized steel | 120V | This product — standard cold-climate spec |
| H5GS45G-1H | Stainless steel | 120V | Upgrade for highly corrosive environments |
| H5G45G-2H | Galvanized steel | 240V | For 240V supply circuits |
| H5GS45G-2H | Stainless steel | 240V | 240V + corrosive environments |

Installation & Compliance Notes
- Floor mounting requires four (4) M12 anchor bolts (not supplied). Anchor into reinforced concrete or an engineered base.
- Water supply must deliver 29–87 PSI dynamic pressure during full flow. If your supply exceeds 87 PSI, add the optional pressure reducing valve at order time.
- Electrical hookup requires a hardwired connection to a 120 VAC single-phase 60/50 Hz supply. Installation must be performed by a qualified electrician familiar with Class 1 Division 2 wiring methods.
- ANSI Z358.1 requires tepid water (60°–100°F / 16°–38°C) for the full 15-minute flush. In most cold-climate installations, a thermostatic mixing valve on a tempered hot/cold supply is required upstream of the unit.
- ANSI Z358.1 requires a weekly activation test of every emergency shower and eyewash plus a full annual inspection. The optional Hughes Deluge Test Kit is recommended for verifying flow during the weekly test.
- Use the Hughes-supplied Installation, Operation, and Maintenance Instruction (IOMI) document for site preparation, wiring, and commissioning. EyewashDirect can email the latest version on request.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between H5G45G-1H and EXP-AH-5G/45GGALV-110?
EXP-AH-5G/45GGALV-110 is a legacy distributor part number for a comparable Hughes unit. The current Justrite/Hughes part number for the floor-mounted galvanized 120V freeze-protected combination shower with closed ABS bowl is H5G45G-1H. If you previously specified EXP-AH-5G/45GGALV-110, confirm the exact specs against the current H5G45G-1H datasheet before ordering.
Is the H5G45G-1H ANSI Z358.1 compliant?
Yes. The unit meets ANSI Z358.1-2014 and EN 15154 standards and supports OSHA emergency eyewash and shower requirements, including 20 GPM shower flow, 3 GPM aerated eyewash flow, stay-open valve, and 15-minute continuous flow capability.
What's the lowest temperature this shower can operate in?
The minimum ambient operating temperature is −4°F (−20°C). Below that, contact EyewashDirect — Hughes offers tank-fed cold-climate models and custom-engineered units for colder service.
Does this unit deliver tepid water on its own?
No. The trace-tape heating system protects the pipework from freezing but does not warm the supply water itself. ANSI Z358.1 requires flushing fluid between 60°F and 100°F (16°–38°C) for the full 15-minute flush. In most cold-climate installations, a thermostatic mixing valve (TMV) on a tempered hot/cold supply is installed upstream — sold separately or as a Hughes factory add-on.
Can this be installed in a hazardous (Class 1, Division 2) area?
Yes. The H5G45G-1H is rated for Class 1, Division 2, Gas Groups C & D, Temperature Code T3 — covering atmospheres where ethylene (Group C) and most common process hydrocarbons such as propane, butane, and gasoline vapors (Group D) may occasionally be present. The electrical components are certified for the rating; a qualified electrician must perform the hookup using Class 1 Division 2 wiring methods.
What's the difference between galvanized (H5G) and stainless (H5GS) pipework?
Galvanized steel is the standard, more cost-effective choice and handles the vast majority of outdoor industrial environments. Stainless steel pipework is the upgrade for highly corrosive conditions — coastal/marine sites, chlorine or acid exposure, salt-spray atmospheres — where galvanizing would degrade over time.
Does the heating tape run year-round?
No. The unit includes an air thermostat that automatically cuts power to the heating tape when ambient temperatures rise above the freeze threshold. This prevents overheating in summer and reduces electrical cost without any manual switching.
What's included with the unit?
The H5G45G-1H ships with the safety shower, closed ABS eye/face wash bowl, trace-tape heating with insulated jacket, air thermostat, junction box for electrical connection, and a universal safety shower sign. Anchor bolts are not supplied.
